Christmas in the Inner West 2019 – Where to join in the festivities

We’ve updated the best places to see Christmas lights and carols for 2019.  The annual Christmas lights pilgrimage is becoming a highlight of the festive season for many Inner West families. Each year the local light displays seem to gain more momentum as the countdown to Christmas begins with locals wandering the streets enjoying the amazing displays. Then there’s the local Carols in the Park. Join family and friends and sing along to all your favourite Christmas songs.

We highlight the best spots to see lights and where you can join in the festive spirit in the Inner West.

Best streets to see Inner West Christmas lights

There’s nothing more Christmassy than packing the family into the car to go and see Christmas lights. As you drive along you see the children’s excited faces and hear their ooohs and ahhs. While we’re sure that there will be many new additions to the local light scene this year, history tells us the star streets from the last few years are worth plugging into your GPS and exploring.

  • Second Street, Ashbury (along with other surrounding streets) will spectacularly light up again this year from Saturday 7th December 2019 and go right through to Christmas Day/New Year. Be sure to come along with family and friends and take a leisurely stroll up and down the streets and enjoy the beautiful Christmas lights and decorations. Looking forward to seeing you.
  • An impressively decorated house awaits you at 48 Cameron Street in Birchgrove. This house will be lit up from December 1 until January 6 from 8:30pm to 11:30pm.
  • William Street in Leichhardt (near the corner of Elswick Street) is normally lit up with some great light displays. Other houses along Elswick Street also often join in the fun, as do many on Allen Street.

Be sure to let us know if there’s any other suggestions that we’ve missed and we can add to the list!

Carols in the Park

The Communities for Communities Carols in the Park is not to be missed and is fun for all the family – mark in your diary Wednesday 18 December. It is held in the waterfront Halliday Park on McGrath Avenue in Five Dock. Activities begin at 6pm so bring a picnic rug and battery-operated candles (safety first!) and enjoy the atmosphere. The carols begin at 7:00pm with performances from the Inner West Community Band and there will be a visit from Santa, too.

Communities for Communities raises money to support disadvantaged villages in Thailand, Philippines, South Vietnam, Indonesia and Fiji. Closer to home they have funded paediatric physiotherapy hours, a playground and now a hydrotherapy facility at Lucas Gardens School in Five Dock. Canada Bay Club is proud to sponsor the organisation’s Carols in the Park to help raise money for these worthy causes as well as helping our local community come together and enjoy the Christmas spirit.

Can’t make it to Carols in the Park, there are a few other options so you can get your carol fix this year. Perfect for children to get in touch with instruments of the orchestra and celebrate the spirit of Christmas, Cushion Concert The Magic Of Christmas will be held in Balmain Town Hall on Saturday 7 December from 11-12:00pm. Then there is Norton Street Christmas Storytimes on Wednesday 18 December from 11-11:45am and Town Hall Christmas Storytimes on Thursday 19 December from 11-11:45am. Carols on the Green is the perfect family event held in Village Church Annandale on Sunday 22 December from 7:30-9:30pm. You can also enjoy Carols on Norton on Sunday 22 December at 7:00pm in Pioneers Memorial Park Leichardt.

Christmas at Canada Bay Club

Did you know Canada Bay Club also has a fabulous line-up of Christmas activities planned? We are holding a number of raffles in the lead up to the festive season. The Christmas Ham Raffles are being held on Monday 9 and 16 December with 30 hams given away each night. On Tuesday 17 December from 5:30pm we’re holding The Christmas Toy Raffle which has prizes worth $5,000 up for grabs. Further details on our raffles are available here.

And if you’ve left your Christmas lunch plans to the last minute, why not book into The Brasserie for lunch? We’ll be serving four courses of delicious traditional festive fare with all the trimmings and Christmas pudding for dessert. There is a special children’s menu too. See the full menu here.

We hope you enjoy the festive season and all it has to offer. We look forward to wishing you a Merry Christmas at the Canada Bay Club and hopefully having you join us for some of the great Christmas activities we have on.
