Get to know Andrew: our Community Engagement Manager
Many of our members know the smiling face of our own Andrew Wooley. As Community Engagement/Business Development Manager, he plays an extremely important role at Canada Bay Club. Andrew is responsible for strengthening relationships with local community groups that the Club supports as well as identifying other charitable organisations that could benefit from our help. You could say he is the link between the local community and the Club.
In this blog we learn how Andrew’s career path led him to Canada Bay Club and why he loves his role.
How long have you been working at the Club and what is your role?
I started in July 2018 as the Community Engagement /Business Development manager, which involves working with the community organisations that we donate to. I am responsible for strengthening ties with organisations we already work in partnership with as well as building new relationships with community groups. I also promote our conference and function rooms to local businesses and community groups as the Club has fantastic facilities for corporate and social events.
What drew you to the role?
I started my career in hospitality, before moving into corporate sales. I worked for many years on a luxury cruise ship, which allowed me to travel to places that I might never have been able to – and meet quite a few celebrities – all while getting paid! Once you work in hospitality it becomes part of your DNA. I was looking for a role that had a mix of hospitality and sales, so this position fits the bill perfectly.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I get a great deal of satisfaction when the Club helps an organisation and know we have made a difference.
What does a typical day at work involve for you?
I spend time meeting people from different community groups to gain an understanding of what they do and then working out if the Club can assist them. I read grant applications and prioritise them for review with the board. I also show clients around the Club’s facilities and see how we can best serve their needs and make their event the best it can be.
What do you like most about having contact with local community groups?
Seeing the great work that our community partners do and how each of these groups are making an impact on the lives of people within our local area as well as the wider region. The organisations the Club supports cover a wide cross-section, including youth, sport, aged care, and disability services. The great things they do create a sense of community, which is in line with the Club’s goals.
Why do you think Canada Bay Club is such an important part of the local community?
The Club has been around since 1966 and during that time it has become an important meeting place for the local community. The Club has evolved over the years and moved with the times, but the core values of being a community club and being of service to the area have remained. This is what our members and the community value most about the Club.
How does the Club plan to help local charities in 2019?
Last year we gave away over $500,000 in Club Grants and we will do that again this year. Our challenge is to share the funds with as many organisations as possible, so we continue to make an impact in the local area. We also believe that if we can get different groups working together they can benefit each other.
What is the best thing about working at the Club?
The fact that everyone is committed to making Canada Bay Club a great place for our members and the local community.
You are very passionate about the local community. Did you grow up in the Inner West?
I was actually born in Fiji and lived there until I was 16. Then we moved to New Zealand and lived there for the next 10 years, before moving to Australia. I have lived in the Inner West for over 20 years and have been actively involved in the local community, especially when my children were growing up.
