Winter School Holidays: Fun Activities to Entertain the Kids

Winter school holidays often prove to be the toughest time to entertain the kids. It’s cold outside, and in many instances, the kids just want to snuggle up under the blankets and stay inside. Luckily for our Inner West parents there’s lots of great options to keep your children amused and mix up the holiday break, with local businesses catering for a range of age groups and interests.

Whilst there’s always a trip to the movies, or a good old-fashioned play date with friends, the school holidays also provide an ideal opportunity for many kids to try something new or get more involved in an adventure that they enjoy. Don’t forget that many of these options will accept the creative kids voucher, so be sure to ask who accepts the rebate if you’re looking to book.

We’ve covered some of the popular activities in blog articles previously, many of which are also running similar options again, but here are some other local holiday activities to explore which may not be on your radar:

FOR THE CREATIVE KIDS

  • BRICKS 4 KIDZ

With the success of reality TV show Lego Masters there’s never been such an interest in creating with Lego. Bricks 4 KIDZ are running a number of holiday workshops for kids aged 5-11 in Balmain, Annandale and Leichhardt to let the kids get creative making a range of different Lego masterpieces.

  • INNER WEST COUNCIL GETS CREATIVE

The Inner West Council has curated some fun art classes, from jewellery making, to drawing, to creating clay creatures. Some are even free to attend and are likely to book out, so don’t delay.

  • ART AT PAPER ROCK SCISSORS

Let the kids make their own beeswax wraps, a crazy clock, learn to knit or get creative and build a coral reef. There’s a range of school holiday activities being held at Paper Rock Scissors in Rozelle for school aged kids, with extended hours available too.

FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR FUN & GAMES

  • SYDNEY ACADEMY OF CHESS

Outsmart your opponents with some chess coaching. Whether you’re a beginner or a master of the game, there’s a range of different courses to help you conquer the game of chess.

  • LEARN SOME CIRCUS SKILLS

Roll up, roll up, the circus is in town to teach your kids the art of the flying trapeze. Held every day of the week during school holidays, they cater for all levels and abilities. Fly high and perform some adventurous moves!

  • KIDS’ DISCO

Come and visit Canada Bay Club and let Little Monstas entertain your kids at our Kids’ Disco on Saturday 13 July. Entry is just $7. Parents can also organise a party package for only $25 per child (minimum of 10 children), which includes a choice of food, two jugs of drink and ice-cream, as well as your own party table. FOR THE SPORTY KIDS

  • SYDNEY UNIVERSITY WINTER SCHOOL HOLIDAY SPORTS CAMPS

The Sydney University Winter school holiday camps are always popular. Aimed at boys and girls aged 5-15, there’s over 10 different sports on offer such as AFL, dance, cricket, martial arts and if you can’t decide, the multi sport camp is a great way to try a range of different sporting activities, including fencing.

  • SYDNEY FC FOOTBALL (SOCCER) CLINICS IN ROZELLE

Deck yourself out in the light blue and white and prepare to play like your favourite football star at Sydney FC with the three-day coaching courses at King George Park in Rozelle. Expert coaching, includes FC training shirt, socks and hat. Hone your soccer skills, meet new friends and be inspired by some of Sydney’s finest football coaches.

  • GLEBE GREYHOUNDS WINTER AFL CAMP

Back by popular demand, the Glebe Greyhounds Winter Footy Camp is a five-day skill development camp at Jubilee Oval over the first week of the school holidays. Run by Oscar Gibbins, along with a star line up of coaches. Improve your skills for a week, or just join in for a day. Places are limited, so don’t delay in making your booking if you’re keen to join in.

  • GYMNASTICS

Budding gymnasts can refine their moves at a range of Inner West programs. Inner West Gymnastics run Camp Cartwheel in Marrickville, and PLC Croydon are hosting artistic and aerobic gymnastics classes for beginners and intermediates.

MIX IT UP – A RANGE OF OPTIONS

  • FIVE DOCK LEISURE CENTRE: BAYSIDE KIDS

Bayside Kids is a fully supervised school holiday program at the Five Dock Leisure Centre catered to working and busy parents. Their program includes a range of sports and activities, including gymnastics, movies, arts and crafts for children 4-12 years of age. NSW Police and Laser Warriors will come along, and there’s also some fun excursions planned. Head along and then pop into the club for dinner at Baysia or The Brasserie.
