Christmas in the Inner West 2021 – Where to Join In the Festivities
Ready to throw yourself into the festive season? Here’s our take on the best family-friendly Christmas activities in the Inner West for 2021, as well as what you can expect at The Club. Embrace the spirit of the season and enjoy!
Best Streets to See Inner West Christmas Lights
Making an annual pilgrimage to see the Christmas lights* in our suburbs is becoming a highlight and tradition of the festive season for many Inner West families. Each year, the local light displays seem to gain momentum as the countdown to Christmas begins, with locals wandering the streets by car and on foot oohing and aahing. Among the festive streets and addresses that have made our list this year are:
- Second Street, Ashbury (expect brightly lit baubles, bells, snowflakes, Santas, signs and more)
- 191 Burwood Road, Concord (with decades of decorating prowess, this household decks the halls with more than 100,000 LEDs – and with a backdrop of Christmas tunes)
- 48 Cameron Street, Birchgrove (this small house goes big with a Nativity scene, projections, angels, reindeer and more)
- 7 South Street, Tempe (think ornaments, faux snow, a bubble and fog machine, and loads of lights).
**Please note that these listings are correct at the time of publishing and are subject to change. Please be respectful when visiting houses with Christmas lights and maintain safe social distancing rules.**
Carols in the Community
The Communities for Communities Carols in Halliday Park (McGrath Avenue, Five Dock) is back after a year off in 2020 with fun for the whole family. This year’s event takes place on Wednesday 15 December from 6 pm to 9 pm. Bring a picnic rug and battery-operated candles (safety first!) and enjoy the atmosphere. Carols in the Park is free, but you must register your attendance so that event organisers are compliant with current COVID-19 restrictions. Food and drink will be available for purchase.
Communities for Communities raises money to support disadvantaged villages in Thailand, the Philippines, South Vietnam, Indonesia and Fiji. Closer to home, the organisation has funded paediatric physiotherapy hours, a playground and now a hydrotherapy facility at Lucas Gardens School in Five Dock.
Just want to keep listening to and singing those Christmas tunes? There are other venues hosting carols this year as well. Christmas Carols in Concord promises a fun family event in the piazza on 9 December from 6 to 8 pm, with live performances from Platinum Harmony and the Canada Bay Community Choir. This is another free community event (no bookings necessary) and will comply with COVID-19 restrictions.
The Metropolitan Orchestra’s Cushion Concert for the kids also returns for 2021 with The Magic of Christmas at Balmain Town Hall for several performances over two days: Saturday 4 December and Sunday 5 December. Tickets are selling fast!
Online Christmas Fun
For a bit of virtual merriment, City of Canada Bay Libraries is hosting an online evening of Christmas bingo and trivia on 3 December from 6:30 pm to 8 pm. Enter as an individual, couple or family. This theme night will test your Christmas knowledge, have players shouting ‘BINGO!’ and even give away a range of prizes. Note that to participate in the trivia, you need to have two devices handy – both a laptop or tablet and a mobile phone. Bookings are essential, and you’ll get a Zoom link for the event once you register.
Christmas at Canada Bay Club
Here at The Club, we have a fabulous line-up of Christmas activities planned.
Don’t miss our Christmas ham raffles and toy raffle in the lead-up to the festive season.
We’re also gearing up for our Christmas Day Lunch at The Brasserie on 25 December, now taking bookings for the four-course feast. Take the stress out of the day and come celebrate at Canada Bay Club with family and friends! The menu features classic Christmas fare, with a special menu for children aged 2 to 12 years (children under 2 eat free!).
We hope you enjoy the festive season and all it has to offer. We look forward to wishing you a Merry Christmas at the Canada Bay Club.
