Fitness Tips for the New Year

Whether you’re a mum with kids in tow wanting a regular fitness outlet, a retiree looking to stay active or working full-time and wanting to fit your fitness goals in, we’ve sourced a whole range of activities for all ages, abilities and interests to try in the City of Canada Bay area.

Pound the pavement

Get your legs and arms pumping and start walking. The Bay Run is one of the most exquisite walks, runs or rides in our local area. With an abundance of history and landmarks to take in as you work your way around the 7km trail, moving and keeping your steps up has never been so fun. Learn about artefacts, bridges and parks along the way and you won’t even feel like you’re working out! Perfect for all abilities, you can take it at your own pace and… it’s free.

Over the net

Dust off your old badminton racquet, round up your friends and get moving around the courts at Five Dock Leisure centre. It’s the perfect way to shake off your day in the office and get your heart rate up. Courts are for casual hire and vary on cost depending on the time you want to play. There’s also equipment available to hire if you don’t have your own gear. Badminton is a fun, active game that helps increase muscle tone, works your legs and gives you a cardio workout to boot. It’s also a great social outing. So, by booking in a hit out just once a week, you not only stick to your fitness goals, you can catch up with friends, too.

Just for the ladies

There’s no better combination than the great outdoors and exercise. So when your backdrop for push-ups is on the shore of the bay at King George Oval, you know you’re going to get results. Goddess Outdoor Fitness is the perfect place for Inner West ladies – from beginners to mums with bubs and hard-core fitness fanatics – to take their fitness to the next level. Owner and head trainer, Amy Mitchell, mixes it up while putting her Goddesses through their paces – boxing one day, kettle-bell swings the next – all the while supporting and guiding her troops to get the most out of their workouts. These flexible, fun, varied training programs will keep you on the fitness path.

Senior sessions!

Take a Tai Chi class at Canada Bay Club and you’ll feel zen all day long. Helping to maintain strength, flexibility and balance during exercise, our Tai Chi classes are run by the Australian Academy of Tai Chi and offer a gentle workout for those looking to stay centred and fit during retirement. Clear your diary Wednesday mornings at 10.15am and come give it a try.

If a faster pace is what you’re after, put your dancing shoes on and prepare to hit the dance floor. Every Thursday night, the Canada Bay Club comes alive with modern jive partner dance classes, otherwise known as Ceroc. This easy-to-learn, fun, energetic activity is great for all ages and gets the cardio flowing. Feel the music and learn something new while staying fit. Or join one of our Seniors Fitness Classes on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Hole in One

Not every sport means working up a sweat. Golf is not only good for your endurance, stamina and getting your core working, it’s also an excellent concentration tool for keeping the mind active. If you’ve never picked up a club before, don’t worry. The picturesque surrounds of the comfortable – but challenging – course at Barnwell Park Golf Course is adaptable to any level. “Barney” offers social and competitive golf events and even have PGA professionals on hand for expert advice and coaching. Every Sunday morning, a team from Canada Bay Club hits the greens and plays a round at this waterside course. Ask the club’s reception about joining the team!

Canada Bay Club in Sydney's Inner West has been a meeting place for the local community for more than 50 years. Since opening in 1966, the culturally diverse club has grown froma small social sports centre to a club with state-of-the-art function rooms, two restaurants, live entertainment, kids' arcade, and health and fitness classes for its 20,000+ members.
