Let us tell you the story of how this Inner West community club became the proud owners of beachside accommodation in NSW’s Forster. In 1987, the Canada Bay Club’s board of directors decided to increase the benefits of being a member of the club by investing in an apartment block situated near the main beach of Forster. As a new-build, the directors and long-time members took it upon themselves to personally furnish and fit-out the building.

Since then, this affordable accommodation has been enjoyed by club members for 30 years. At only 3-4 hours’ drive from Sydney, Forster sits in the Great Lakes region and makes for a wonderful getaway location. Its crystal clear beaches, fishing spots and stunning natural landscapes set the tone for a holiday to remember. Not sure what’s to be found in that neck of the woods? Read on to find out more about Forster and the Great Lakes region. And if you’re keen to book the Forster accommodation, head here for price and booking details.

Top 5 Things to do in Forster

The Tanks at Pebbly Beach

This organically formed stretch of rock creates a fantastic swimming and snorkeling spot on the beach side, as the rocks form a barrier to the waves creating a protected, tranquil and shallow haven for swimmers and local fauna. You never know what you might uncover behind the rocks and crevices in The Tanks – named after the collection of steel ship’s tanks that were stationed there in the late 19th century. The area next to the protected pool is now a grassy knoll with a children’s playground and walking track that forms part of the Bicentennial Walkway. Pebbly Beach (which is mainly sandy!), is a hop, skip and a jump away.

Bicentennial Walkway

This 4km winding coastal pathway begins just off North St near the ocean baths at Forster Beach. Start here and head east, walking past Second Head along the foreshore, with the ocean forming a magnificent view all the way past Bennetts Head Lookout (stop to enjoy the 360-degree views of the lake, ocean and hills!) and down to One Mile Beach.

One Mile Beach

This amazingly long stretch of sand is popular with families and surfers alike. It’s patrolled on weekends and during busy periods, and is bound by a wonderful park with barbecue and picnic facilities and a kids playground to keep the young ones entertained. Giant Sandhill, which is nearby, offers a fantastic vantage point for local dolphins frolicking in the ocean, as well as proving popular with sand boarders and sand sliders.

Visit the Lakes

There’s a reason why this area is called The Great Lakes! If you’re staying in Forster, enjoy the gorgeous clear waters of nearby Wallis Lake. With a sandy shoreline and breathtaking views all round, it’s the perfect paddle boarding scene and there are boat hire places all around the area, so head out and explore the glorious waterways.

Eat seafood!

Forster, and the Great Lakes area as a whole, is renowned for its fresh local seafood. The clean fertile waterways yield a rich seafood harvest every year, including the region’s famous oysters. In fact, the Great Lakes is one of the largest suppliers of oysters on the east coast of Australia – and it’s one of the few places where you can buy fresh seafood as soon as it’s fished from the lake. Look out for the local co-ops, cafes and discover the secret eating spots and growers hiding in the hinterland as well.
