Get to know the functions team
Here at Canada Bay Club we love our staff and they love hosting your functions. Functions and events have been a key part of Canada Bay Club’s offering since the club’s very early days. In 2016, our function rooms underwent an extensive renovation. Every one of our 5 rooms is now fitted with state-of-the-art audio visual equipment and self-serve bean-to-cup espresso machines. Perfect for your corporate team meeting or sales conference.
We are also excited that our latest renovation will soon complete. This project will deliver a new front façade for the club, a covered drop off area, a balcony off the Kings Bay Lounge (the pre-function lounge area), alfresco dining and outdoor children’s play area. Our facilities are brilliant but the best part about having your function at Canada Bay Club are the friendly functions staff. We look forward to introducing you to them in person, but in the meantime, you can read more about Caroline, Luciano, Emma, Vesta and Chris.

What is a typical day like for you?
Caroline: Every day is different, it ranges from liaising with clients and suppliers, handling logistics, managing budgets and invoicing, and presenting post-event reports. It’s a juggling act with phones ringing, emails coming in and meeting with clients face-to-face.
Emma: We can often start quite early in the morning as many corporate events like to host breakfast functions and work until late with Social events and dinners. Each day brings something different from meeting with clients, setting up rooms, working in the events themselves.
Luciano: My main focus is to keep our patrons and colleagues happy. My day usually starts with room set ups and preparation for the days functions. I discuss with the client their function and make sure they are happy with the room preparation and all other details of their event.
Vesta: Varies from running all types of events on the floor as well as helping with administrative tasks in the office as required.
Chris: My job is very physical and involves setting-up and packing down the function rooms. I’m also part of the function service team.
Why did you choose a career in hospitality?
Caroline: I love how fast-paced Events can be and working together as part of a big team is great.
Emma: Most importantly, it is because I love people and being given the opportunity to help them organise events to celebrate some of the most significant milestones in their lives is a privilege.
Luciano: Even though sometimes it can be hard, I like the interaction with people. I’m a people person, I enjoy working on big formal functions. My job is to make sure all clients and their guests go home with a smile on their face.
Vesta: It’s a people-facing role with a focus on customer service in an interesting, vibrant environment. No two days are ever the same with the excitement of events.
Chris: I enjoy the variety of working in the functions department.
What are your top tips for someone planning to hold their occasion at a function venue?
Emma: Have an idea of your budget and what type of event you are after so we can provide you with accurate costings and suggestions! If you have seen something you like or been to an event you enjoyed, bring the information with you as it’s a good place to start.
Luciano: First and most importantly, clients should never be afraid to ask anything about the function. From my side, I would suggest: The price, what type of food is involved, timing, what is included, but perhaps the most common question that clients never ask is actually what is not included.
What type of functions and events are held at the club?
Emma: We have held every possible type of event you could imagine from Accordion Concerts to WWE Wrestling Celebrations, huge conferences for the Finance Industry to NSW Ambulance workshops, Weddings, 16th Birthdays, small committee meetings, Fundraising trivia nights – You name it, we have been a part of it.
Luciano: We have a combination of Corporate, casual birthday, wake and formal dinner.
Vesta: Community Events, Social Events (Weddings, Birthdays, School Events).
What type of function packages are offered at the club?
Emma: We cater to a range of different events and have a package to suit any need including catering, beverages and conferencing. However, they can also be easily customised to suit your event requirements.
What has been your favourite event you have worked on at the club?
Caroline: Community events highlight the wonderful support networks available in our local area and I also enjoy the variety in corporate events held at our venue.
Emma: There have been so many amazingly unique events that we have hosted at the club, that it’s almost impossible to pick! The Prostate Cancer Fundraiser for 320 people was very satisfying as it was the largest event of that nature we had done up to that point. Weddings are always a favourite of mine and kids parties are fun.
Luciano: Without a shadow of doubt the Halloween function and the NYE function were the funniest and most interesting for me. The opposite side I could say that the function I did for club Marconi was very good too. Very formal, where I did have a chance to show my skill in hospitality.
Vesta: Cultural and social events. Giving something back to our community is always satisfying (such as CO.AS.IT concerts or luncheons for local organisations) and I love being a part of people’s birthday celebrations.
Chris: We had a Harry Potter- themed 30th Birthday where all the guests came in fancy-dress and the Canada Bay Room was styled to look like the Great Dining Hall! It was such a fun atmosphere and the staff even got into the spirit.
What are the benefits of the club’s location?
Emma: We are conveniently located in between Parramatta and the CBD which is perfect for event organisers who have guests coming from all over Sydney. We are also a great alternative to more expensive CBD locations as we have plenty of complimentary parking just 15 minutes from the city.
Luciano: The best feedback I get from clients is they like the location and easy parking. Some of the patrons like to come back because they feel very comfortable with our friendly staff.
Can you share any stories you have on any special events which have been held at the club.
Luciano: To me all events are special, there are lots of delightful stories I could talk about. Perhaps one story I can share is a recent function for Association Giuliani carnivalé. The team and I had a chance to wear some wigs and have fun with members and their guests. I did receive lots of hugs from my fellow Italians, I don’t know why!
Vesta: My first wedding at Canada Bay Club. The Bride and Groom, and entire bridal party were beautiful. It was a relaxed, fun yet beautiful event, where you could just see the love and special moments between the lovely couple. The bride performed a heartfelt song that she had worded towards the groom, which was very funny and heartfelt
What do you like most about working at Canada Bay Club?
Caroline: The team I get to work with every day and the diversity of the work we do. It’s immensely satisfying working with clients to deliver a successful event.
Emma: Working here is like being a part of a big family. It’s a fun working environment and we always support each other to ensure we are giving the best possible service to our members.
Luciano: Thanks to my Italian background I feel very comfortable working at Canada Bay Club. The friendly staff and fantastic patrons, of course, make it a great place to work. It’s like working with family.
Vesta: The people I work with. It is like a big goofy family they are all hardworking and professional. The atmosphere and environment of the workplace, with fun loving culture.
Chris: I really like working with a great bunch of people.
