Brrr… the winter chill is finally here. And while you may want to reach for a warm blanket and sip hot tea at home for the next few months, you’ll be missing out on a great deal of fun activities that are held throughout the Inner West during winter, if you do. To get you out of the house, Canada Bay Club has put together our favourite mix of things for seniors to keep busy when the temperature drops. Give these top activites a try…

Get tech savvy!

If you’ve been wanting to learn more about the internet, find out what a search engine is, how to send an email or join Facebook, winter is the perfect time to sign up for computer classes at Concord Library. These free lessons run every week from 10am to 12pm during May and June, with a focus on Greek and Italian seniors so language is no barrier to gaining your keyboard knowledge!

More than your garden shed

Whether you’re a retired gentleman looking for something to keep your hands busy on an individual or community project, or a lady looking to sew, knit and be creative, a Shed is the place to go. These meeting places of like-minded people are a hub of activities, support, teamwork and social catch-ups. With Sheds across the Inner West in Haberfield, Marrickville and Strathfield for the men and Dulwich Hill for the women you’ll easily find a location close by.

For those sunny winter days, when the green surrounds are too good to pass up, don your gardening gloves and pay a traditional garden a visit at any number of the local community gardens in the area. With seasonal crops on rotation you’ll be sure to find a patch to help nurture through the winter months.

Deal them up

If you want to learn something new and cards are your thing, why not try your hand at bridge? The Strathfield Bridge Club meets at Canada Bay Club each Monday and Thursday morning from 10:15am. Bring a friend, order a coffee at the Canada Bay Club bar – on your way to your table in the auditorium – and deal in your 13 cards ready to play. Then, settle in and enjoy a friendly game in a cosy environment.

Training tips from the pros

When it comes to exercise it doesn’t mean you have to head outdoors every time. Yes, we have amazing walks at our doorstep for those days when you feel like pounding the pavement. But there are also indoor (heated!) water activities and a variety of programs available at the Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre to keep your body moving during the cold weather. Classes cover all abilities for seniors, so whether you’re at an active fitness level or looking for a lighter pace, there’s something for everyone… and it’s all indoors!

It’s a win, win for every senior in the Inner West, find out more about what’s on at Canada Bay Club here. Or ask our friendly staff at reception about how to join in next time you visit the club.
